News & Notes: July 24, 2015

The team behind German-themed Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia has opened a traditional American tavern in the city's Queen Village section. Like its Teutonic sibling, Whetstone Tavern (700 S. 5th St., 267-239-0906) denotes gluten-free options like crab cakes and polenta on the menu.

A bit further southwest in town, Triangle Tavern (1338 S. 10th St., 215-800-1992) has gluten-free items such as antipasti (with bread), mussels and salads.

Gluten-free choices are listed on the lunch and dinner menus at the Washington Crossing Inn (1295 General Washington Memorial Blvd., 215-493-3634). Several desserts are gluten free as well.

Reader Jared G. let me know that at Downbeach Deli in Margate (8 S. Essex Ave., 609-823-7310), sandwiches can be made with gluten-free bread and Sweet Note bagels are also available. A separate toaster is kept in the kitchen.

In Levittown, Shannon's Sweet Shoppe (1269 Woodbourne Rd., 215-547-8380) sells gluten-free cupcakes, cookies, brownies and biscotti and can prepare special-occasion cakes too. The bakers wash, rinse and sanitize all equipment, bowls, pans and utensils between uses. Gluten-free and regular items are not made at the same time to avoid cross contact.

Beverly's Pastry Shop in Pottstown (322 E. High St., 610-323-2020) prepares an array of gluten-free desserts such as thin-mint cookies, brownies and lemon squares on different days from traditional baked goods. The bakery also uses separate equipment, bakeware and utensils.

If you're looking to send a care package or mark a special occasion, several gourmet bakeries like Mrs. Fields, David's Cookies and Tate's Bake Shop offer gluten-free options for cookies, brownies and muffins. Details are in my Tuesday post.

Paoli Hospital (255 W. Lancaster Ave.) is sponsoring a free, hour-long class providing useful tips on how to live gluten-free while away at college. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. Online registration is available.

Have a great weekend!
