News & Notes: March 18, 2016

Before I get to this week's news, I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all of Gluten Free Philly's readers and followers. This past Tuesday marked the 7th anniversary of my very first blog post. Way back in March 2009, as a parent of a child with Celiac Disease, I figured others were going through the same challenges. Creating a blog was the best way to share our family's experiences and information we had gathered. I get immense satisfaction from hearing from readers when they tell me they loved a new product I've written about here or a gluten-free-friendly restaurant that didn't know about until I mentioned it. I appreciate your continued support and kind words.

Rita’s Italian Ice has debuted All-Natural Italian Ice in time for the 2016 season. The new Italian Ice line extension is made with natural ingredients and comes in four flavors: Pineapple, Strawberry, Banana and Orange. Each of the new flavors are made fresh daily without artificial coloring or artificial flavors and are - like the rest of Rita’s fruit-flavored ices - free of trans fats, cholesterol and gluten. Get a free Italian ice at your local Rita's location on the first day of Spring - this Sunday - from noon to 9 p.m.

Following a strong launch in the Pacific Northwest last year, MillerCoors is expanding its naturally gluten-free Coors Peak beer brand with a second style, Golden Lager. Like its sibling Copper Lager, the Golden Lager is brewed with 100 percent gluten-free ingredients, including California brown rice and Pacific Northwest hops. For now, Coors Peak Copper and Golden Lagers are available only in the Seattle and Portland metropolitan areas.

Stoli Vodka has announced the nationwide launch of Stoli Gluten Free. The new recipe is made with corn and buckwheat harvested from Russian fields. The ingredients are then distilled and filtered before being blended with spring water. While unflavored distilled spirits are gluten free, Stoli Gluten Free can be labeled as such in the United States because it is derived from ingredients other than wheat, barley and rye. Stoli Gluten Free will be available in April.

My Tuesday post recapped several of the new gluten-free products previewed at the Expo West natural-foods show in California last week. Highlights include a buffalo chicken mac-and-cheese dish and organic flavored tortilla chips.

Speranza in Westville, New Jersey (158 Broadway, 856-349-7660) offers a gluten-free menu featuring a selection of pasta dishes (including lobster mac and cheese), entrees, salads and appetizers.

The gluten-free menu at Coastal Grille in Reading (2713 N. Meridian Blvd., 610-743-4006) includes surf and turf dishes, pasta and sandwiches. Coastal Grille's sister restaurant, Austin's, is in nearby Wyomissing.

Two Stones Pub's newest Delaware location is now open in Hockessin (300 Lantana Dr., 302-239-2200). Gluten-free items, including tacos made with corn tortillas, are noted on the lunch and dinner menus. The restaurant maintains shared fryers.

Have a great weekend!
