Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Photo by M. Kennedy for Visit Philadelphia™
Baseball is back! After a lengthy lockout and delay to the start of the season, the 2022 Phillies home opener is Friday, April 8 against the Oakland Athletics.

Citizens Bank Park will again have a dedicated gluten-free area. This season, the gluten-free cart is located at Section 122, behind home plate directly across from Guest Services. Expect a similar menu as in past years, with hot dogs, cheesesteaks, cookies and other snacks. Chickie's & Pete's Crabfries at Ashburn Alley and Sections 208 and 319 are prepared in dedicated fryers.

KLYR rum, a new gluten-free distilled spirit made in York County, Pennsylvania, will be sold at stands throughout the ballpark this year.

Meanwhile, Ocean City's own Manco & Manco has replaced Seasons Pizza as CBP's pizza purveyor. While its stand in Ashburn Alley will offer gluten-free pizza, I am still waiting to learn more about preparation, so stay tuned.

Eating Gluten Free at Citizens Bank Park

Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies, has added a number of new features for the 2018 Major League Baseball season, including a wiffle ball field for kids. One new concept from last year, Zoom Food, is where gluten-free options can now be found. Zoom Food, located in Section 126, has a Wawa-style touch-screen ordering system. Gluten-free options at Zoom include cheesesteaks, hot dogs, pizza, chicken tenders, soft pretzels, brownies, cookies, chips, peanuts and Redbridge beer. Additional options will be added throughout the season.

In addition, gluten-free Cobb salads, loaded nachos, vegetarian chili and brownies are now available at Harry the K's, while the Ashburn Alley Chickie's & Pete's Crabfries stand prepares only fries in dedicated fryers. There are several Rita's stands throughout the ballpark serving gluten-free water ice (Sections 106, 116, 132, 208, 220, 316 and Ashburn Alley), and Redbridge beer, Stella Cidre hard cider and Spiked Seltzer are available at various stands, including at Brewerytown (Sections 113, 139, 204, 209, 318, 323, 229).

UPDATED 4/12/18: Due to popular demand, the dedicated stand has returned as a dedicated portable cart on the concourse level (Sections 125/126).

The Eagles' Nest

With the Flyers, Sixers and Phillies once again failing to making the playoffs this year, Philly sports fans are hanging their hopes on the Eagles to end the drought. For the Birds, the 2015 NFL season kicks off on Sept. 14 with a Monday Night Football clash in Atlanta. The season's first regular-season home game is the following Sunday, Sept. 20, against the division rival Dallas Cowboys.

Gluten-free options will once again be available at the home of the Eagles, Lincoln Financial Field. Stand-alone carts offering exclusively gluten-free concessions, located at Sections 120 and 216, will have hot dogs, sausages, buffalo falafel (which is vegan), beer, cookies and brownies.

Scoring a Touchdown

The coming football season will mark the first time that all of the facilities at the South Philadelphia sports complex have dedicated gluten-free concession stands. For the Eagles' 2014 season, Lincoln Financial Field will have portable carts in Sections 120 and 216.

New items provided by concessionaire Aramark include cheesesteaks (in Sections 121, 138, 205 and 221), black bean burgers (in Section 216) and buffalo wraps made with mixed greens, roasted onions and peppers, buffalo falafel and vegan blue cheese dressing. Also at the dedicated carts are hot Italian sausages, all-beef hot dogs, tortilla chips and salsa, locally-made cookies and brownies from Sweet Christine's, and beers and hard ciders. Popcorn at the stadium is gluten free, as are Chickie's & Pete's Crabfries.

News & Notes: April 11, 2014

Taking over the former Peace A Pizza location in Ardmore is Snap Custom Pizza (4 Station Rd., 610-896-4488), a Chipotle-style quick-service restaurant where the pizzas are made in about two minutes. Chef Tim Van Winkle says that after a gluten-free pizza order is placed, a single employee will handle the preparation. using a pre-made crust, the employee will pull ingredients and toppings from the walk-in fridge and prepare the pie with separate bakeware and utensils. All pizzas with a gluten-free crust are $8.49, regardless of whether guests order a featured or custom pie with a choice of toppings. (Most toppings are gluten free, but avoid the meatballs and blue cheese salad dressing.) The shop's grand opening is tomorrow, when doors open at 11 a.m. and the first 50 guests get a free pizza. It's then $5 per pizza until 5 p.m.

News & Notes: September 13, 2013

On this Celiac Awareness Day, there's no better time to celebrate the news that there are three all-gluten-free bakeries coming to the Delaware Valley.

Bucks County will get its own 100% gluten-free storefront bakery this fall. The Happy Mixer is looking at a late October or early November opening at the New Britain Village Square in Chalfont (4275 County Line Rd.). The menu includes donuts, cakes, cookies, muffins and biscotti.

Pure Sweets, which I first wrote about back in February 2012, just signed a lease for 1706 Locust Street near Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia with a Spring 2014 opening planned. Not only will owner Andrea Kyan have a spot to vend her 100% gluten free, vegan, organic and kosher cookies and macaroons along with her new line of tonics, she'll be offering prepared food reflecting her Southeast Asian heritage.  She's also considering delivery to South Jersey.

News & Notes: June 14, 2013

Gluten-free Goldfish? Well, they're Goldfish-ish. Pepperidge Farm has begun distributing three varieties of its new Goldfish Puffs - all gluten free - at Target stores nationally. Made mostly with corn meal, the Puffs are more like cheese puffs than traditional Goldfish crackers, but it's good to see another gluten-free Pepperidge Farm product on the shelf, particularly one with the famous Goldfish name on it.

General Mills continues to roll out new gluten-free products. The company's newest cereal flavor is Vanilla Chex, the seventh variety of Chex to bear a "gluten free" label.

There's more at the shore to report this week. The newest restaurant at the Revel in Atlantic City (500 Boardwalk, 609-225-9906) is Yubōka Noodle Bar, part of the Jose Garces culinary empire. The opening menu has two gluten-free "small plates": Dragon Vegetable Salad and Mouth Watering Cold Chicken.

Meanwhile, Paesano's Philly Style sandwich shop is stocking gluten-free rolls at its new location at Memories in Margate (9518 Amherst Ave., 609-823-2196). The Downbeach location is open Wednesdays through Sundays over the summer, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Though Pure Tacos is no longer on the Ocean City Boardwalk, you can get gluten-free sausages and fries from a dedicated cooker at Botto's Sausage Express (984 Boardwalk, 609-938-0004). (Thanks to reader Danielle F. for the tip.)

Gluten-free options at French-Thai BYO Nadia in Lansdale (113 Walnut St., 215-855-3256) are featured on the menu. (Thanks, Alicia A.)

In Exton, sister restaurants Brickside Grille (540 Wellington Square, 610-321-1600) and The Drafting Room (635 N. Pottstown Pike, 610-363-0521) list gluten-free options on their menus. I'm told, though, that the wings and fries are not prepared in separate fryers.

Although not posted online, Carlucci's Waterfront in Mt. Laurel (876 Centerton Rd., 856-235-5737) has a gluten-free menu on hand.

Riverton's Milanese Pizza (519 Howard St., 856-786-1414) prepares 12" gluten-free pizzas with separate sauce and cheese, baked on individual pans.

Amani's BYOB in Downingtown (105 E. Lancaster Ave., 484-237-8179) has undergone restaurant training through the Gluten Intolerance Group. Down the street, gluten-free-friendly Firecreek will be closing on Sunday.

Bonefish Grill, a GIG-trained chain, has opened a location in North Wales (27 Airport Square, 215-361-2932), off of Route 309 across from the Montgomeryville Mall. Bonefish's gluten-free menu was updated in April.

GFP contributor Jason reviewed area grilled-cheese sandwich chain Melt Down in Tuesday's post.

Reader Amanda C. pointed me to an recent news story about the efforts of Oregon's Widmer Brothers to have its gluten-removed Omission Beer labeled as "gluten free." Current law prohibits beers like Omission and Estella Damm Daura from being labeled as gluten free because they start out with glutenous barley malt as an ingredient. This is significant because there are restaurants, locally and elsewhere, listing these beers on their drink menus as "gluten free." There is much debate about whether the gluten-removed beers can be accurately measured for gluten content with the testing that is currently available.

Reader Bethann K. let me know that gluten-free sandwich buns are available at the concession stands at this week's U.S. Open golf tournament at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore.

Some minor league ballpark news for you: Allentown's Coca-Cola Park, home of the Phillies' AAA-affiliate Lehigh Valley IronPigs, has gluten-free pizza at the concourse pizza stand near Section 204, while gluten-free cookies from The Grain Exchange and Yogen Fruz are sold at the "Healthy Plate" stand at Arm & Hammer Ballpark, home of the Yankees' AA Trenton Thunder farm team.

Have a great weekend and Happy Fathers' Day!

Phinally!

I confess that I've been jealous of sports fans in cities like New York, Atlanta and Denver, who have been able to eat worry-free at Major League Baseball games for several years thanks to dedicated gluten-free stands at Citi Field, Turner Field and Coors Field. This season, it's Philly's time to join the club.

Located at Citizens Bank Park on the main concourse (Section 136), a dedicated gluten-free concessions stand brings together all of last year's offerings in one place. Phillies fans can get freshly grilled cheesesteaks and Hatfield hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, Seasons pizza, chicken fingers, peanuts, cookies and brownies. (The rolls and sweets are made by Sweet Christine's in Kennett Square.) In addition to soft drinks and water, the stand has Woodchuck hard cider on tap, Angry Orchard hard cider in cans and Redbridge beer in bottles.

Elsewhere at the ballpark, the Chickie's & Pete's Crab Fries in Ashburn Alley are cooked in a dedicated fryer (and the cheese sauce is fine), and all flavors of Philadelphia Water Ice (available in Ashburn Alley and stands at Sections 106, 116, 132, 208/308 and 316/416) are gluten free. Hot dogs and salads are available at the Market Express stand (Section 321/421).

The Phillies' home opener is this Friday afternoon against the Kansas City Royals. Expanded food selections are expected at Celiac Awareness Night on Friday, Aug. 16, when the Phillies take on the Dodgers at 7:05 p.m. Proceeds from sales of group tickets in the gluten-free sections will benefit celiac awareness.

Kudos to Aramark, particularly Kevin Tedesco and Jeremy Campbell, for expanding the gluten-free choices at the ballpark and dedicating efforts to making the stand a reality this season.

News & Notes: March 15, 2013

I can't think of any better news to share today - four years to the day I launched Gluten Free Philly - than the fact that Phillies games will be a whole lot more enjoyable this season, win or lose. Citizens Bank Park will have an all-gluten-free kiosk located on the main concourse at section 136, between third base and left field. The menu will consist of hot dogs, cheese steaks, pizza, snacks and beer, with some other items in the works.

The well-regarded pan-Asian Nectar in Berwyn (1091 Lancaster Ave., 610-725-9000) has added a gluten-free menu that includes chicken, shrimp and lobster pad Thai, fried rice, a seafood hot pot with rice noodles, sushi and sashimi.

Penndel's Steak and Hoagie Factory (313 W. Lincoln Hwy., 215-741-6555) has gluten-free rolls for $2 additional. (Thanks Ina M.) A separate grill is in place for prep of the gluten-free sandwiches and the owner has plans to add other items.

Reader Jaime L. let me know that Piatto Grille in Conshohocken (410 W. Ridge Pike, 610-825-1300) can make most dishes gluten free.

P.F. Chang's new Shaking Beef dish
P.F. Chang's has two new dishes that can be made gluten free. One is Shaking Beef, a traditional Vietnamese favorite with sliced beef, broccolini and potatoes tossed together and served over a cool salad with lime vinaigrette. The other is from the limited-time "Inspired" menu: Thai Basil Sambal Noodles - rice noodles, fresh vegetables and Thai basil tossed in a spicy coconut sambal sauce

In last Tuesday's post, you can read about which local pizza chain turns out the best gluten-free pizza according to GFP contributor Jason. The post prompted a friendly debate on the GFP Facebook page.

At last week's Expo East natural-foods showcase, Uncle Wally's, a Long Island bakery founded by chocolate chip cookie entrepreneur Wally "Famous" Amos, debuted GFCO-certified gluten-free chocolate chip and blueberry muffins under the Pillsbury brand that will be available nationally.

Glutino's newest product, unveiled at Expo East, is gluten-free pretzel chips.

We haven't heard from Glutenfreeda for a while, but the company, which makes burritos, pizza wraps and ice cream sandwiches, has unveiled another niche product: all-natural "Hot Pocket"-like Pocket Sandwiches made with gluten-free whole grain bread wrapped around "delicious, gooey, savory fillings" that cook in under one minute. Varieties include nitrate-free Bacon & Fluffy Eggs with Cheddar Cheese, Savory Roast Beef with Caramelized Onions & Provolone Cheese, nitrate-free Hickory Smoked Ham with Cheddar and Monterey Jack Cheese and Southwest Chicken Chipotle with black beans and corn.

The company is also extending is instant-oatmeal line with Instant Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cups with resealable lids. All Glutenfreeda products are  produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility and certified gluten-free at less than 5 ppm.

GFP has been nominated in the Best Blog category in the Triumph Dining Best of Gluten-Free Awards this year. Voting is open through March 31 and you can vote once daily per computer or mobile device. If you're pressed for time, just jump ahead to the Stores and Resources voting page, where you can show your support for the blog. There's no need to enter any contact information.

Don't forget that you can follow GFP on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ and, as always, tips and comments are welcome via email.

I hope to see many of you at the CHOP celiac event on Sunday. Have a great weekend!

Pancakes are also an option at Atiya Ola's Cafe, a raw/vegan cafe in West Philadelphia (4505 Baltimore Ave., 215-939-3298), says reader Laura G.

Tis' the season - for skiing, that is. In Tuesday's post, I shared word of the gluten-free options available at ski resorts at the Poconos and other day's-drive spots.

The big product news this week was the unveiling of Glutino's toaster pastries in Apple Cinnamon and Strawberry varieties. Whole Foods Markets will be the first to stock these treats. You can print a 55¢ off coupon via the Glutino website.

At Trader Joe's, I discovered an new gluten-free all purpose flour, sold in 1 lb. bags for $3.99 each. Gluten Free on a Shoestring has reviewed the product and ventures that it's made for TJ's by King Arthur Flour.

Tickets will soon be on sale for Celiac Awareness Night at the Phillies, this year to take place on Friday, Aug. 16, when the Phightins take on the L.A. Dodgers. I hope to have some news on gluten-free options for the 2013 season in the next few weeks.

Have a great weekend!

News & Notes: August 10, 2012

Since there won't be playoff baseball in town for the first time in years, the focus this fall will be on the Eagles. The regular season kicks off September 9 with the Birds in Cleveland, with the first home game scheduled for the following Sunday. Aramark will once again have gluten-free fare at Lincoln Financial Field: hot dogs, Larabars and Redbridge beer are available at the "Philly Favorites" stands at sections 117, 205 and 219, and gluten-free Crabfries are sold at the Chickie's & Pete's locations at sections 102, 119, 229 and 241. Fans can also bring their own food to the game so long as it's wrapped in clear plastic.

Despite the Phillies' woes this season, there are other reasons to go to Citizens Bank Park. Gluten-free cheesesteaks are now available at Elfreth's Alley Grill at Section 109, and Bull's BBQ in Ashburn Alley has gluten-free rolls. This complements the pizza recently added at Season Pizza in the Alley. Kudos to Aramark for stepping up its game.

The baked chicken tenders at "healthy fast food" restaurant Bryn & Dane's in Horsham (400 Privet Rd., 215-675-1599) are gluten free, as are all salads and smoothies. (Thanks to reader Jamie L. for the heads-up.)

Old City's Panorama Ristorante, nestled in the Penn's View Hotel (Front & Market Sts., 215-922-7800), now offers gluten-free pasta. The restaurant holds the Guinness world record for the largest cruvinet, or wine preservation and dispensing system (120 bottles).

The all-vegan Vgë Café (say it "vee-gee") in Bryn Mawr (845 Lancaster Ave., 610-527-3091) has gluten-free mac & cheese, soups and salads.

In Margate, the Mediterranean restaurant Sofia (9314 Amherst Ave., 609-822-9111) notes gluten-free entrees, including crabcakes, with an asterisk on the dinner menu. Many of the appetizers and salads are also safe.

Elsewhere down the shore, the gluten-free menu at Alumni Grill in Wildwood (3316 Pacific Ave., 609-523-1111) includes burgers and sandwiches on rolls and fries.

Gone from Center City is Buca di Beppo. The Italian chain's locations in Exton, Wynnewood and Wyomissing remain open.

Every Thursday is gluten-free day at the Tortilla Press Cantina in Merchantville (7716 Maple Ave., 856-356-2050). The menu includes beer-battered fish and chips made with Bards Beer. (Thanks to reader Mark M.)

As mentioned here two weeks ago, Philadelphia Brewing Co. has released a new gluten-free hard cider. The Traditional Dry cider is now available on tap at Atlantis the Lost Bar in Kensington, McGillin's in Midtown Village and Cherry Street Tavern in Logan Square. It'll be available in bottles in the fall.

As mentioned here on Tuesday, locally made Bill's Best Organic BBQ Sauces are free of gluten (of course) as well as the dreaded high-fructose corn syrup.

The Ravitz ShopRite markets in Cherry Hill, Marlton and Mt. Laurel now stock Butterfly Bakery's gluten-free blueberry mini muffins, sliced creme cakes and other baked goods. The company's gluten-free products, made with teff flour, are produced in a separate facility.

Reader Rose B. let me know that Dogfish Head's Tweason'ale is on the current bottled beer list at Keg & Kitchen in Westmont (90 Haddon Ave., 856-833-9800).

Voting continues for "Best Local Blogger" on PHL17's Philly Hot List. Please show your support by voting for the blog at this link.

Finally this week, best wishes to hometown gluten-free chef Monica Glass, who is leaving our fair city for a executive pastry chef position in Boston.

Have a great weekend!

News & Notes: July 27, 2012

As readers of my Tuesday post know, I published an open letter to representatives of Aramark Sports & Entertainment (which runs the concessions at Citizens Bank Park) about a disappointing Celiac Awareness Night at last Friday's Phillies game. Aramark has heard our criticism and has apologized for what happened. Their representatives have assured me that they will improve their services and, in particular, the gluten-free menu at the ballpark. My sincere thanks go to the many readers who shared their frustration on Facebook, via Twitter and by email, as there was strength in numbers.

From lemons to lemonade: Aramark plans to have gluten-free pizza available beginning with next week's homestand against the Diamondbacks. Look for the pizza at the Seasons Pizza stand in Ashburn Alley. In addition to the usual fare at the Section 128 South Philadelphia Market stand, gluten-free hot dogs, salads and Redbridge beer are now sold at the Market Express stand at Section 321. Other additions are in the works for this season and beyond, so keep it tuned to this station.

Coatesville gastropub The Whip Tavern (1383 N. Chatham Rd., 610-383-0600) notes gluten-free dishes like bangers and mash and, um, bubble and squeak (Google that, won't you?), as well as more familiar choices such as chicken wings, on its lunch and dinner menus. Other items can be modified to accommodate gluten-free diets. The restaurant's current beer options include New Planet Off Grid Pale Ale and six different hard ciders.

Pure Fare, serving all-gluten-free sandwiches and other healthful items, has opened its second Philadelphia location on South Street West (1609 South St., 267-687-2292). For those in University City, you can find Pure Fare's new food truck on 40th Street between Spruce and Locust streets.

The Metropolitan in North Wales (750 Upper State Rd., 215-361-1603) now offers Udi's hamburger buns, along with many other gluten-free choices. (Thanks to reader Holly S. for the tip.)

Agiato in Manayunk (4359 Main St., 215-482-9700) currently offers gluten-free Fox Tail pale ale from Nevada and six different hard ciders.

Congratulations to the The Little Bakery in Blue Bell (921 Penllyn-Blue Bell Pike, 267-708-0984), winner of Philadelphia magazine's Best of Philly award for "Best Gluten-Free Sweets." The editors singled out the gluten-free bakery for its biscotti and mint iced chocolate brownies.

Beginning Monday, Brûlée Bakery's gluten-free macarons and brownies will be sold at Martindale's Natural Market in Springfield (1172 Baltimore Pike, 610-543-6811).

Whole Foods announced yesterday that it's opening a larger market in Wynnewood, three times the size of the current location. The new store, which doesn't yet have an exact location. is expected to open in 2015.

Traditional Dry will be the first variety of the new gluten-free Commonwealth Ciders line from Kensington's Philadelphia Brewing Company. The cider initially will be available on draft, with bottles to follow this fall.

Today is the last day to save $15 on adult admission to the Delaware Valley's largest gluten-free event, Appetite for Awareness. The all-ages A4A will take place at The Strawbridge Building in Center City Philadelphia on September 23, and there'll be dozens of area restaurants and national and local vendors. It's all you can eat and drink for one price. New restaurant additions include Brio Tuscan Grille, Rouge and The Tomato Bistro. Buy tickets through this link and use promotion code MIKE for the discount, which can be combined with the purchase of student and children's tickets.

Also, individuals and businesses are invited to place ads in the keepsake Appetite for Awareness program book, which will be distributed to attendees at the event. The reservation form and ad specifications are posted at this link.

Two other event notes: Volunteers are needed in advance of and during A4A, and those who commit to four hours or more receive free admission to the event. More information is available through this link. For the artistically inclined, there's a T-shirt design contest for shirts that will be sold at the event, with some cool prizes awarded to the winner. Details about the contest (entries are due by August 15) are here.

Philadelphia Horticultural Society staffer Claire Baker, who writes the So What CAN You Eat? blog, is hosting a discussion about celiac disease and will share gluten-free recipes today from noon to 2 p.m. at the PHS Pop-Up Garden at 1905 Walnut Street. Attendees can bring a brown-bag lunch (or maybe something from nearby Pure Tacos) and come and go as they please.

I'll leave you this week with a clip from NBC10's The Ten Show featuring gluten-free chef Laura Hahn, who blogs at Guilt Free Foodie Cutie. Laura won the show's "Next Local TV Chef" competition and will appear on The Ten Show periodically over the next several months.

Have a great weekend!

An Open Letter to Aramark

Many of you were disappointed by the lack of variety and quantity of food at last week's Celiac Awareness Night at the Phillies game, among other issues. On Tuesday, July 24, I posted in this space an open letter to representatives of Aramark Sports & Entertainment about the event. I had a positive conversation with several Aramark representatives the following day and I'm encouraged by their promise to improve the gluten-free concessions this season and in the future. I hope to have more news to share soon.

I also received a written response from Aramark, posted below.
July 26, 2012
Michael,

We apologize for the less than positive experience you had at Citizens Bank Park last week. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to making the next Celiac Awareness Night a great event for everyone. By taking the time to speak with us on how to improve on the past, present and future, we now have the knowledge and tools necessary to further enhance our everyday gluten free offerings and guest experience.

Supporting our customers with dietary needs and restrictions is important to us and we will do our best to make sure that the 2013 event is memorable for all of the right reasons.

Sincerely,
Kevin Tedesco & Jeremy Campbell

Gluten Free Road Trip: 'Burghers and Flies

"Pittsburgh?" My wife looked at me incredulously. "Pittsburgh over Spring Break?" I smiled. "Ah, it's the Phillies," she said. I had scanned the Phillies' 2012 schedule as soon as it came out last fall and made a mental note that the Phillies would open on the road there. "The season starts that weekend," I countered. Co-workers in Pittsburgh - the same ones that boasted how great the Penguins are, mind you - told me that the Pirates ballpark, PNC Park, is one of the nicest in the country, so I certainly didn't need much arm-twisting. With three sports-crazy males in the house, my wife was hardly in a position to put the kibosh on my suggestion.

I realized how expensive Phillies seats are when I went to buy tickets for the two Pirates games we planned to attend. While I paid $35 apiece for seats in the lower level for the Easter Sunday game, I picked up upper-level tickets for the Saturday night game for the kids for just $10 (the adult tickets were $16).

Beyond going to the games, though, we had no itinerary planned except that we wanted to visit architect Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece Fallingwater. As the weekend drew near, I realized that the Flyers would end the regular season in Pittsburgh against the Penguins. It looked for a bit like that game would decide seeding for the playoffs and would be an exciting game to attend. As it turned out, the seedings were decided earlier in the week so the game wasn't going to have any significance. To boot, the cheapest seat on StubHub was $115 for standing room.

We left early on Saturday morning and traversed much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We stopped for breakfast in King of Prussia at Ruby's Diner, where my son savored an Awesome Egg Sandwich served on a Udi's gluten-free burger bun.

Our lunch was further west in Somerset. Eat'n Park, a neighborhood restaurant chain with more than 75 locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, has a surprisingly large gluten-free menu. It was there that our son opted for a Black Angus hamburger, which came on a French Meadow sandwich roll.

By late afternoon, we rolled into the Steel City, crossed into the city's North Shore via the Andy Warhol Bridge, and arrived at our hotel, which was across the street from PNC Park. There were thousands of Phillies fans in town already, hanging out at the hotel and tailgating in nearby parking lots.

The ballpark, now in its 12th season, is indeed magnificent. It stands along the Allegheny River and provides a fantastic view of downtown Pittsburgh. The vista was even more impressive that night when the post-game fireworks show began. (Turns out there really isn't a bad seat in the house.) As for the games - well, let's just say the Phightins' continued their struggles at that ballpark. They failed to hit the ball consistently and dropped both weekend games.

PNC Park added a gluten-free concession stand called Just4U this season. On the menu are hot dogs, nachos, salads, grilled cheese and grilled veggie sandwiches (made with Schar bread), potato chips and Redbridge beer. Gluten-free fries from dedicated fryers are also available at the Chickie's & Pete's stand (nice to see a familiar Philly brand in enemy territory) and the Primanti Brothers stand.

Before the Sunday matinee, we drove over to the popular Duquesne Incline, a century-old inclined plane railroad that scales Mount Washington. Once at the observation deck, we took in the gorgeous view of Pittsburgh's skyline.

There were a few gluten-free spots in the city that were closed for the holiday (including Gluuteny bakery), so we ended up having dinner Sunday at the BRAVO! Cucina Italiana in the Galleria Mall. The chain just added a gluten-free menu that features pasta. Our son opted for the grilled salmon served with penne (cooked, intentionally or not, al dente) and I ordered the gluten-free pasta pomodoro with chicken. Although the menu was new, the staff and kitchen were knowledgeable about proper prep. We also appreciated that, for a change, none of the places we ate upcharged us for ordering gluten-free bread or pasta.

Fallingwater, a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1930s for a well-to-do Pittsburgh family, is an architectural marvel located about 90 minutes southeast of the city in Mill Run. The house, a National Historic Landmark, looks like it's built right over a waterfall. We took an hour-long guided tour of the house's interior Monday morning and were able to snap some spectacular pictures of the iconic building.

Guided by our GPS, we tracked down the address for the Flight 93 National Memorial and then drove to the Somerset County field where the heroic passengers and crew members on that plane lost their lives but saved countless others. The first phase of the Memorial was dedicated last year, and construction has begun on other features, including a larger visitor center and memorial groves. Our oldest was a toddler on 9/11 and our youngest wasn't even born. It was important for us - and for them - to fully appreciate what those 40 people did and to pay respects.

As I finished the drive home, my wife told me that she enjoyed the trip much more than she expected. When we travel with the kids, we're often trying to cram in so many activities and visit certain places that it's exhausting. Our long weekend in western Pennsylvania reminded us that it doesn't have to be that way.
