News & Notes: August 18, 2017

Let's get the bad news out of the way first. The Jules Thin Crust location in Cherry Hill (1558 Kings Hwy. N., 856-448-4275) is closing on Sunday, August 27, leaving one less place in the area to order gluten-free pizza. The other Jules locations are not affected.

Philly.com reports that Washington Square West's Pennsylvania 6 has closed. The gastropub offered a number of gluten-free options.

On the plus side, reader Joe M. let me know that M.A.T.T.'s Gourmet Sliders has opened a storefront in University City section of Philadelphia (3601 Market St., 215-222-0195), serving burgers with buns (from a designated area of the grill) as well as wings and fries prepped in a dedicated fryer.
The two Delaware locations of Matt's Fish Camp - in Bethany (28635 Coastal Hwy., 302-539-2267) and Lewes (34401 Tenley Ct., 302-644-2267) - have gluten-free menus [Bethany/Lewes]. The Bethany location has gluten-free crabcakes, but note that both utilize shared fryers. (Hat tip to reader Melissa Y.)

Biscuits and other baked goods from Batter, a gluten-free bakery out of Lancaster, are available at the Headhouse Farmers Market in Society Hill (2nd and Lombard Sts.) every Sunday. The products are sold at the stand occupied by Ric's Breads. Owner Daria, who has celiac disease, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America. Thanks to reader Gail for the tip.

At the newly relocated Giwa Kitchen near Rittenhouse Square (1722 Sansom St., 267-758-2112), bibimbap (Korean vegetable and rice bowls) can be prepared with gluten-free hot sauce or soy sauce upon request. Avoid the proteins, which are not gluten free, but indulge on kimchi, cucumber salad and red onion salads as acceptable sides.

Nearly the entire menu at Properly Fueled in Bordentown (1 1/2 Crosswicks St., 609-424-0036) is either gluten free or can be made gluten free, including bowls, soups and sandwiches with gluten-free bread.

Several followers of the Gluten Free Philly Facebook page let me know that Preps Pizza in Ocean City (1004 Boardwalk, 609-398-0636) offers gluten-free pizza that's prepared and handled separately.

New gluten-free products at Traders Joe's include Purple Maize corn flakes cereal and cauliflower pizza.

Ahead of the upcoming Jewish High Holidays, Greensgrow Community Kitchen in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia (2139 E. Cumberland St.) will host a Gluten-Free Jewish Baking Workshop on Saturday, September 9. The cost is $35 and online registration is a must, and the menu includes apple cake and macaroons.

Have a great weekend!
