News & Notes: May 13, 2016

While we were in southern Delaware last weekend for a youth baseball tournament, I discovered several new gluten-free finds in the area. Nalu Surf Bar in Dewey (1308 Coastal Hwy., 302-227-1449) has a gluten-free menu comprised of wraps, tacos and protein entrees, while across the street at Rusty Rudder (113 Dickinson St., 302-227-3888), many seafood items on the buffet are gluten free, as are several a la carte options listed on the menu.

In Lewes, Striper Bites (107 Savannah Rd., 302-645-4657) notes gluten-free items on its menus, but be aware that the buffalo wings are prepared in a shared fryer.

At Crabby Dick's in Rehoboth Beach (18831 Coastal Hwy., 302-645-9132) and Delaware City (30 Clinton St., 302-832-5100), the restaurants keep a gluten-free guide on hand. Acceptable options include steampots, seafood and salads.

Elsewhere in Rehoboth, The Fresh Market is opening on June 8 in the Rehoboth Gateway Shopping Center on Coastal Highway.

Grotto Pizza recently opened another Delaware location, this one in Middletown (315 Auto Park Dr., 302-314-9500). All outlets offer gluten-free pizza.

Peter McAndrews just keeps 'em coming. Not long after opening Popolino in Northern Liberties, the chef is about to debut his fifth Italian concept - the first outside of Philadelphia. La Porta in Edgmont (1192 N. Middleton Rd., 610-358-5104), due open on May 1, will have pizza sensa glutine prepared and baked in a separate area.

Lots of additions in the First State this week (the home of tax-free shopping, you know). FireStone in Wilmington (110 S. West St., 302-658-6626) has a gluten-free menu with appetizers, salads, entrees, bunless sandwiches and sides.

To promote a greater level of food safety, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness is introducing a tiered credentialing system for restaurants that will enable gluten-free diners to understand restaurant practices through a voluntary and transparent disclosure process. The GREAT Kitchen's Green Designation means that a restaurant has verified ingredients and has undertaken comprehensive training and strict cross-examination controls. An Amber Designation means that a restaurant has verified ingredients and undertaken basic server training, but kitchen practices may vary widely.

Toté in the Italian Market (1024 S. 9th Street, 215-551-5511) has been renamed Taffets, as chef Omer Taffet and his wife are now co-owners of the bakery.

Free Is For Me Desserts (609-920-3086) bakes gluten-free cheesecakes exclusively, out of Hainesport, New Jersey. Delivery is free within Burlington County, with a $1 charge to Camden and Gloucester counties.

News & Notes: July 9, 2010

Thanks to everyone who turned out at the Phillies game Wednesday to support Celiac Awareness Night. The gluten-free food stand offered Seasons Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, Good Eatz sweets and more. With the large turnout and variety of food and beverages purchased, hopefully the stadium concessionaire will take notice and add to the current gluten-free options.

Earlier in the week, I wrote about my family's recent trip to Ocean City that included stops at two gluten-free-friendly eateries on the Boardwalk.

Terra, a New American in Philly's WashWest nabe (243 South Camac Street, 215-545-1102), can accommodate gluten-free diners. Thanks to Whitney and Kristin at the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness for the good word.

Doylestown's Baked on Main (22 South Main Street, 215-340-7629) has gluten-free dough available for its rustic flatbreads. I'm told that the prep area is cleaned for a gluten-free order and the flatbreads are baked in the oven on a pan.

Also in the 'burbs, Limoncello Ristorante in West Chester (9 North Walnut Street, 610-436-6230) offers gluten-free pasta.

While the flatbreads there aren't gluten-free, Earth Bread + Brewery in Mt. Airy (7136 Germantown Avenue, 215-242-6666) does have Glutenus Minimus on tap, brewed with rice, buckwheat and sorghum. Reader Chuck B., who e-mailed me about the beer and took the photo nearby, described it as "very light, smooth, refreshing and lemony."

I've posted the updated gluten-free menus from several Jose Garces concepts to the restaurant list: Amada and Chima recently refreshed their choices.

Reader Jayne O. let me know that Lucky Bones Backwater Grille in Cape May is working on a formal gluten-free menu, which should be available before the summer is out.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Roy's, the Hawaiian fusion restaurant in Center City, closed last weekend.

Now arriving on Track 1 is Main Line Baking Co., a new gluten-free bakery set to officially open on Monday at the Wynnewood Train Station (75 East Wynnewood Road, 215-292-4200). Samples and free Colombe coffee will be available today from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The baked goods - items like chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, lemon pound cake and vanilla cupcakes - will be available Monday through Friday. The sweets are baked in a dedicated gluten-free/dairy-free kitchen on the premises. A tip of the conductor's cap to Jessica at the Celiac Advocate blog, who learned about the bakery in her travels this week.

New in Haddonfield is Desserted Pastries (605 North Haddon Avenue, 856-275-7357). Owner Carrie Longacre tells me that she has gluten-free chocolate chip cookies available. She uses specially designated utensils, bowls and the like and sanitizes the kitchen's stainless steel table for that rendition. She can also make other gluten-free sweets with advance notice.

Virago Baking Company has reopened at its new home at 322 1/2 West Main Street in Lansdale.

With thanks to reader Mark M., the last day of retail sales at Mr. Ritts Gluten Free Bakery in Millville is July 31. The store is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the end of the month, but call to check on availability.

Plum Catering (215-880-3881) is a new gluten-free caterer that specializes in on-site parties and private chef services throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The company will be catering a celiac awareness picnic at Scranton's Nay Aug Park on Sunday, August 1 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is being hosted by Laure Stasik, owner of Alternative Eating in Scranton, with proceeds donated to the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research. Plum Catering will be serving up burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, turkey chili, veggie chili, fudge, peanut butter-chocolate poppers and more. There will be live music, kids' games and a Chinese auction. Ticket information is available from Alternative Eating at 570-344-6569.

Next time you're at Ikea in South Philadelphia or Conshohocken to pick up a Billy bookcase or Ekby shelf, don't forget to grab a gluten-free, straight-outta-Stockholm almond torte or raspberry cheesecake.

Have a great weekend!

Eat More Treats

UPDATE (9/10/10): Unfortunately, Tesori's recently ceased operations.
________________________________

While the imminent closure of Mr. Ritts in Millville will leave South Jersey with one less option for fresh gluten-free baked goods, Tesori's Gluten Free Treats is a worthy alternative.

Phil and Christine Brownridge started their Medford-area bakery, named for their daughter, last year. In 2001, after years of digestive problems and endless testing, Phil was diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. Although relieved to finally know the cause of his ailments, he had to contend with the realization that his diet would change forever.

By coincidence, Christine had spent countless hours helping her mother and grandmother whip up scratch-made desserts. Together, the couple began experimenting with recipes passed down from Christine's family and with new recipes they created together. Phil and Christine were encouraged by the reaction they received from friends and family, and decided to share their results with others.
Christine's baked goods range from breads, cheesecakes, cookie sandwiches, cupcakes and special occasion cakes available for local delivery to brownies, muffins and coffee cakes that can be shipped anywhere in the continental United States. The products are made in a commercial kitchen in Tabernacle using dedicated bakeware and utensils. Many of the recipes can be tweaked to accommodate vegan, lower sugar, egg-free and dairy-free diets.

Orders can be placed directly with Tesori's at 732-337-9690. You can also find selected products at Pasta Pomodoro in Voorhees and the Dutch Wagon Amish Market and Mom's Bake at Home Pizza in Medford.

Against the Grain

Last September, Jill Colombo started The Grain Exchange out of the kitchen in her Doylestown-area house. Since then, her homemade gluten-free sweets have made their way into many Bucks County retail outlets. Jill, who herself can't consume gluten, bakes an array of cookies, brownies, cakes and other goodies.

The staff here at Gluten Free Philly had a chance to try her brownies, Oatmeal Caramel Delights and three different cookies: Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip, Sugar, and Chocolate Chocolate Chip. These cookies are made with a blend comprised of white rice flour, potato starch, tapioca starch and xanthan gum. While we enjoyed all of the treats, the most popular of the bunch were the chewy peanut-butter chip cookies and the moist, gooey oatmeal bars.

The Grain Exchange's brownies and several cookie varieties are available at the Town Crier Bakery in Lahaska, in Doylestown at Café Alessio, Saxby’s Coffee and Maximuck’s Farm Stand, in Plumsteadville at Chubby’s Dairy Barn, the Waterfall Café in Warrington, Kimberton Whole Foods and all three Jules Thin Crust Pizza locations (in Doylestown, Jenkintown and Newtown). During the month of May, some of Jill's baked goods will be sold at the Bucks County Designer House at Fieldstone Farm in Furlong. Her products, including cheesecakes and custom-made birthday and special event cakes, also can be ordered by calling 267-935-9244.

(DISCLOSURE: While The Grain Exchange provided products to me at no cost, such compensation did not influence my review. My full Disclosure Policy can be found toward the bottom right of each page on Gluten Free Philly.)

News & Notes

There's been a lot of interest in the current Goodies Giveaway - a copy of Jacqueline Mallorca's Gluten-Free Italian cookbook, just published this month - but there's still time get in your entry. Just write a comment to the post on your favorite Italian food, along with a way for me to contact you if you're the winner, by Sunday, November 1.

On Wednesday, I wrote about Pei Wei Asian Diner's gluten-free menu and the cool option to place a take-out order online. Now all they need to do is offer a delivery option!

I added a slew of dining establishments to the blog's restaurant list this week. I'll start in my home state of New Jersey, where Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey (777 Harrah's Boulevard, 609-441-5165) has several eateries that accommodate gluten-free diets: Reflections Café, Waterfront Buffet, Polistina's Italian Ristorante and The Steakhouse. Polistina's serves gluten-free pasta upon advance notice, so request it when making a reservation.

In Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Chuckles Pizza & Pasta Restaurant (160 Lawrenceville-Pennington Road, 609-895-6660) recently added pizza, pasta and desserts to its menu. The pasta includes ravioli, gnocchi and stuffed shells served with gluten-free bread, with brownies and carrot cake for dessert. The owner told me that he uses dedicated pans and slicers for the pizza and separate pots and utensils to prepare the pasta.

In Wilmington, Delaware, Fresh Thymes Cafe (1836 North Lovering, 302-656-2026) offers gluten-free bread at breakfast and lunch.

Last but not least are some new spots in Pennsylvania. Melodia Grill in Souderton (664 East Broad Street, 215-721-4000) is a contemporary Asian-influenced BYOB. The other restaurants, all in Philadelphia, participated in the recent Appetite for Awareness event: Agiato, a soon-to-be-opening Italian located in Manayunk (4359 Main Street); City Tavern, a colonial-style American (138 South 2nd Street, 215-413-1443) and Beneluxx Tasting Room, a Continental restaurant with Belgian influences (33 South 3rd Street, 267-318-7269), both in Old City; El Camino Real, a barbeque and Tex-Mex joint in Northern Liberties neighborhood (1040 North 2nd Street, 215-925-1110); Chifa, a Jose Garces-helmed Latin-Asian fusion in Washington Square West (707 Chestnut Street, 215-925-5555), fish, the sister of Mike Stollenwerk's Little Fish located near Graduate Hospital (1708 Lombard Street, 215-545-9600); Sauté, a New American BYOB in Queen Village (775 South Front Street, 215-271-9300); and Time, a self-described "restaurant, whiskey bar & tap room, and Bohemian absinthe lounge" in Midtown Village (1315 Sansom Street, 215-985-4800).

The just-opened Bella Sera Cafe in Philadelphia’s Fishtown section (2146 East Susquehanna Road, 267-939-5178) sells gluten-free cheesecake among its other menu items. Thanks to Grub Street Philadelphia for the tip.

Bella’s in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania (by appointment only, 484-467-1538) specializes in baking "celebration" cakes for weddings, birthdays and the like. Owner Lauren Cortesi's walnut dacquoise with milk chocolate buttercream and flourless chocolate cake are naturally gluten free, and she also offers vegan chocolate, vanilla and carrot cakes and cupcakes with gluten-free ingredients. Although Lauren does bake desserts that are not gluten-free in the same kitchen, she uses separate utensils and equipment for her gluten-free varieties.

On the other side of the Delaware River, Diane’s La Patisserie in West Berlin, New Jersey (405 Bloomfield Drive, 609-560-4111) also bakes gluten-free special occasion cakes. While the bakery uses the same equipment for gluten-free and wheat products, owner Diane Nussbaum tells me that she cleans everything before preparing the gluten-free cakes and takes care to prevent cross-contamination.

I've also added several area gluten-free friendly caterers in the Delaware Valley to what was previously the listing for Bakeries and Markets.

Joe Palumbo's Mirabella Cafe in Cherry Hill, New Jersey is sponsoring another cooking class with Chef Tammy Hughel. The gluten-free three-course tasting menu will be available at the class, to be held on Tuesday, November 12. The class starts at 6 p.m. and costs $40. Reservations are suggested.

With Fall in full swing, Moondance Heavenly Desserts has released its seasonal pumpkin cheesecake, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, in both 6-inch and mini versions. All of the cheesecakes and brownies made by Moondance, which I wrote about in May, are gluten free. They can be found locally at Whole Foods.

Pei Wei's sister restaurant P.F. Chang's China Bistro is offering 20 percent off to members of its Warrior Card loyalty program on Saturday, October 31, whether dining in or taking out. Just show your card at time of purchase.

GoPicnic has its gluten-free SafariMunch on sale at its online store through Sunday, November 1 for $2.99 each. The ready-to-eat meal comes with tortilla chips and salsa, sunflower seed crunch, strawberry applesauce, snack mix and snickerdoodle cookies. Use code GLUTENFREE at checkout to get 20 percent off your order.

Triumph Dining is offering free standard shipping through November 11 on the newly revised third edition of its Essential Gluten-Free Grocery Guide ($19.95), the fourth edition of its Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide ($23.95) and its Gluten-Free Dining Cards ($18.95), which come in 10 languages for use in many ethnic restaurants. We've used the dining cards successfully for many years in American, Japanese, Thai and Chinese eateries. Just visit Triumph Dining's website, add your items to the shopping cart, enter coupon code NEWS389 in the shopping cart area and click the "Apply" button. All of the items come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Finally this week, I wanted to share the link to a post from Lisa at Gluten Free Foodies, who is a Phillies fan living in the state of Washington. Celebrating the Phillies' World Series appearance, she wrote this week that she convinced the owner of her local pizza shop to create a gluten-free Philly Cheese Steak pizza. From the picture she posted on her blog, the pizza looks like a winner!

Have a great weekend!

A Marvelous Night For a Moondance

Moondance Heavenly Desserts is an Ohio bakery that recently began offering its cheesecakes and brownies at Whole Foods markets in the Philadelphia area. Founder Shelley Ritchie, who started the company in 2005, has created a number of desserts that are made in a dedicated gluten-free bakery. In addition to six different cheesecakes, Moondance offers fudge and walnut brownies.

Shelley was kind enough to send us some desserts to sample. Both the mini cheesecakes - baked on a pecan shortbread crust - and the brownies are individually wrapped. We tried the raspberry ribbon cheesecake, which will be featured at Whole Foods for Mothers' Day, along with the classic and butter toffee varieties. While all of the cheesecakes were deliciously creamy, the entire family felt the standout was the butter toffee (above), which is topped with crunchy pecan and toffee pieces. We also enjoyed the brownies, which were rich and moist.

Other cheesecake flavors include chocolate chip, lemon curd, and pumpkin, which is sold seasonally from October to December. In addition to the mini size (4 oz.), Moondance's cheesecakes are sold in a 6-inch version that serves eight people. The brownies (4 oz. for the fudge variety, 5 oz. for walnut) are priced at $3.99 each, the mini cheesecakes at $3.99 each, and the larger cheesecakes at $17.99 each at Whole Foods. The mini cheesecakes also are available for online ordering through the Gluten-Free Mall.
