News & Notes: March 14, 2014

Five years ago tomorrow, I started Gluten Free Philly with the shortest of posts and the intention of sharing my own experiences as the father of an 8-year-old boy with Celiac Disease. We were always calling food manufacturers, trying new products and dining out at restaurants anyway, so I decided to create an outlet to share this information with others who could benefit from it. Little could I have imagined that I'd be still blogging five years later amid a tremendous boom in the number and variety of gluten-free foods, accommodating restaurants and dedicated bakeries. Our school district now offers gluten-free lunches daily, gluten-free concessions are available at every major sports venue in Philadelphia, and nearly every supermarket in the Delaware Valley has at least a modest selection of gluten-free groceries. I'm extremely fortunate that so many of you have taken this journey with us and I appreciate the wonderful recommendations, comments and notes you have shared with me over the years. I take no greater pleasure in writing this blog than when a reader tells me that he or she has benefited from something they've read about here.

Falls Taproom in Philly's East Falls section (3749 Midvale Ave., 215-849-1222) is serving Revolution Cider.

COOK (253 S. 20th St., 215-735-COOK) is a fully-equipped, 16-seat kitchen-classroom where guests can enjoy meals made by Philadelphia-area culinary professionals. On Saturday, October 22 at noon, "Gluten-Free Warrior" Genevieve Sherrow will lead a class on creating a gluten-free brunch menu. Her class menu will include Nutty Millet Porridge with seasonal fruit, Hearty Buckwheat Waffles, Scallion, Cashew and Nori Egg Scramble. The class costs $75 and online registration is available.

Have a great weekend!

News outlets earlier in the week reported that media company Comcast-Spectacor is looking to sell the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team. Those reports broke the same day I posted my Q-and-A interview with Comcast-Spectacor chairman Ed Snider, who went 50 years before being correctly diagnosed with celiac disease.

News & Notes: October 29, 2010

A record 1,600 attendees celebrated gluten-free living at last Sunday's Appetite for Awareness, held at the Philadelphia Cruise Terminal. I've been attending the event for the past five years, and this one was the biggest and best to date. I'll have more to share in a recap coming soon.

This Sunday, October 31, marks the end of the fiscal year for the Ambler-based National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, which organized A4A, trains local restaurants on gluten-free cooking protocols, sponsors awareness events throughout the area, and is a rich source of information about celiac disease. A generous donor has agreed to match contributions to the NFCA made through Sunday dollar for dollar, up to $10,000. If you are able to make a contribution (which may be tax-deductible), I encourage you to do so by then so that it can be doubled - no donation is too small!

Sunday also is the deadline for entering my latest giveaway - a variety of gluten-free groceries from General Mills, including Bisquick, Betty Crocker cake mixes and Chex cereal. To be in the running, post a comment to that blog entry noting your favorite gluten-free-friendly restaurant in the area. Reading your restaurant favorites has prompted me to consider creating a "Readers' Choice" poll in the near future on favorite restaurants for specific cuisines (like Italian and Mexican), markets, pizza, bread, beer and so on. I'm open to suggestions for other categories, so drop me a line to let me know what you want to see.

Los Amigos, with longtime locations in Berlin (461 Route 73 North, 856-767-5216) and Atlantic City (1926 Atlantic Avenue, 609-344-2293), has a gluten-free menu, though no dedicated fryers for chips.

In Milmont Park out in Delaware County, Carmen's Pizza (MacDade Boulevard & Milmont Avenue, 610-532-2300) has gluten-free pizza. The shop uses dedicated cookware and utensils. Thanks to reader Travis, who pens the Trav's Gone Gluten-Free blog, for the tip.

Reader Robin F. recommended modern American restaurant Supper in Philadelphia (925 South Street, 215-592-8180), saying the kitchen was "extremely accommodating" and the pastry chef was able to modify a dessert to make it gluten free.

The Beer Outlet (77 Franklin Mills Boulevard, 215-632-5035) and The Craft Beer Outlet (9910 Frankford Avenue, 215-632-2722) in Northeast Philadelphia stock bottles of Redbridge, New Grist and Estrella Daura as well as many varieties of hard ciders.

Food For All Market in Mt. Airy will have gluten-free items for Thankgiving, including stuffing, gravy and pies. Holiday orders are due by November 11.

GoPicnic just unveiled two more ready-to-eat gluten-free meals: Tuna + Crackers, featuring lemon-pepper tuna, multi-seed crackers, unsweetened applesauce, fruit & nut mix, and an organic dark-chocolate square; and Hummus + Crackers, with hummus dip, multi-seed crackers, dry-roasted edamame, fruit & nut mix, and a chocolate square. The products retail for $4.99 each and are available for ordering direct through the company. Sign up for the company's newsletter and get 10% off your first order. There's also free shipping for orders over $99.

Several readers asked last year if I was aware of any gluten-free fruit cakes available for Christmas, and unfortunately I knew of none. Kinnikinnick Foods will produce one this season that can be ordered as of November 4.

Amazon.com's gluten-free deals for October are almost done. This month's offers, which last only until Sunday, include:

Gluten Free Delaware's next meeting will be held on Sunday, November 7 at Christiana Hospital (Room 1000) starting at 3 p.m. There will be an open discussion and group knowledge share.

The Bucks/Montgomery R.O.C.K. chapter is sponsoring a fire station tour on Sunday, November 14. The event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will include a tour of the Horsham Fire Company (315 Meetinghouse Road), demonstrations and a potluck lunch. All family members are welcome; bring a main meal, side dish or dessert to share. To RSVP (with the number of attendees and childrens' ages), contact Holly and Steve Staugaitis at 267-664-6425.

The next Philadelphia Gluten-Free Supper Club dinner is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, December 14 at Buca di Beppo in Center City. For more information about the club or plans for the dinner, e-mail reader Adriana Z.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and happy Halloween!

Free For All

Two alums of Chestnut Hill's late Good Food Market are setting up shop elsewhere in Philadelphia. Amy Kunkle and Leslie McLaughlin are aiming for an early September opening for their Food For All Market, at 7127 Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy. The concept is a community market specializing in prepared foods, baked goods and groceries, with a focus on catering to health-conscious customers and those with celiac disease and food allergies.

Part of the store will include an area dedicated to preparing and selling homemade meals, with another section featuring local products and produce as well as many allergy-friendly products. The prepared foods - all gluten free - will be made from scratch based on Kunkle's recipes, incorporating local and organic ingredients as often as possible.

Kunkle (formerly chef at Good Food Market), McLaughlin (Good Food's pastry chef) and Rachel Kern, all partners in the venture, plan to carry locally made gluten-free baked goods from Amaranth, Sweet Christine's, Sweet Freedom and Greenwood Kitchen in addition to their own-make products like gluten free/vegan bread. They'll also have gluten-free bagels, muffins, and oatmeal bars for breakfast. Griggstown Quail Farm, Landisdale Farm and Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative also are among the regional food purveyors on board.

News & Notes: March 12, 2010

Thanks to everyone who turned out at Casona in Collingswood last night for a special gluten-free dinner. I hope those of you who attended enjoyed it as much as we did. If you have suggestions for a future get-together - perhaps in Pennsylvania next time out - drop me a line.

On Tuesday, I mentioned that the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness has announced this year's Celiac Awareness night at the Phillies. It will be held on July 7, with discounted tickets available. I've learned that Woodchuck Cider will be available for the first time at all home games, and it's possible that additional gluten-free items will be coming this season.

Super Suppers in Voorhees (910 Haddonfield Berlin Road, 856-784-4550) now offers ready-made gluten-free entrees and sides, including Chicken Satay, Mojo Marinated Flank Steak and Tomato & Zucchini Polenta Bake. The store will be hosting a tasting event on April 8 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call the store to reserve a spot or sign up online ($10 charge). Thanks go to reader Ramona for this info.

Redbridge beer is available at The Pour House in Westmont (124 Haddon Avenue, 856-869-4600).

Miel Patisserie in Philadelphia (204 South 17th Street, 215-731-9191) makes macaroons and flourless cakes that have no gluten-containing ingredients. Note that these items are not made in an area separate from the bakery's other products. Hat tip to reader Gina.

From the Department of Bad News: Natural Goodness, the natural-foods store at 20th & Market in Philadelphia that carried a number of gluten-free items, has closed. Philly's Sweetie's Pie Diner, which offered several gluten-free dinner pies in its menu rotation, closes on Sunday, according to Meal Ticket.

There are a few weeks left in the ski season, so you can still get up to Shawnee Mountain in the Poconos and grab some gluten-free food there. The resort carries hot dog buns, hamburger rolls and sandwich bread from The Grainless Baker. The all-beef hot dogs and hamburgers and the grilled chicken can be cooked using separate pans and utensils. A dedicated french-fryer is located in the Hope Lodge Cafeteria. Also gluten free are tossed salads, puddings, cheese nachos, popcorn, hot chocolate and cereal bars. A shout-out goes to reader Winnie for sending me this information.

After launching Seafood Bites appetizers in 2009, Blue Horizon has introduced two more gluten-free fish products. The company's Crab Cakes are made with Atlantic blue claw crab, while the Fish Sticks are made with Alaskan pollock.

This week I tried Paskesz's Chocolate Pinstripe cookies, which are a gluten-free version of Keebler's Fudge Stripe cookies, and was impressed. If you can't find them in the Passover section of your local market, you can order them online at Amazon.com.

Buffalo Nickel Wingers potato snacks are now available at the Christmas Tree Shops.

The Sinking Spring/Reading, Pennsylvania chapter of R.O.C.K. will hold its next meeting on Saturday, March 20 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Lawn United Methodist Church, located at 15 Woodside Avenue in West Lawn. Parents and children are welcome. Samples from Gillian's Foods and Dad's Gluten-Free Pizza Crust will be available.

On a personal note, Monday marks the one-year anniversary of Gluten Free Philly's launch. I want to extend my gratitude to the growing number of blog readers. You have made my endeavor a gratifying one.

Have a great weekend!

C is for Cooking

Cathy's Kitchen, a meal preparation and delivery service based in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, was born out of Cathy Fishman's love of cooking. She has long enjoyed preparing meals for her family, including her husband who has celiac disease. In October 2009, Cathy set out to share the results of her cooking with others through her new business venture, which focuses on "Nutritious Meals Delivered."

Cathy prepares meals according to customer's specifications and tastes. She starts with a consultation that allows her to create a personalized menu. Many of the items on Cathy's menu are gluten-free by nature, such as fish and chicken dishes with vegetables and rice or potatoes. Cathy's Kitchen uses ingredients like wheat-free tamari when soy sauce is required. For items that use pasta or flour as a thickener, Cathy utilizes gluten-free noodles or flour. Some of her customer favorites include chicken marsala, lemon chicken, grilled halibut, honey-ginger salmon, turkey London broil, and a variety of vegetarian selections like quinoa-stuffed peppers and eggplant rollups.

Cathy is mindful of cross-contamination, reviewing labels and ingredient listings and making sure that cooking equipment that touched gluten is run through the dishwasher before being used for a gluten-free dish.

Customers can eat Cathy's meals fresh on the day they are delivered or freeze them for reheating. Cathy's Kitchen delivers at no charge from Center City Philadelphia to Radnor, with an emphasis on the Main Line east of the Blue Route. Pricing for the meals varies depending on the size and number of meals and side dishes desired. For more information about Cathy's Kitchen, call 610-747-0588 or email Cathy.

News & Notes

There's been a lot of interest in the current Goodies Giveaway - a copy of Jacqueline Mallorca's Gluten-Free Italian cookbook, just published this month - but there's still time get in your entry. Just write a comment to the post on your favorite Italian food, along with a way for me to contact you if you're the winner, by Sunday, November 1.

On Wednesday, I wrote about Pei Wei Asian Diner's gluten-free menu and the cool option to place a take-out order online. Now all they need to do is offer a delivery option!

I added a slew of dining establishments to the blog's restaurant list this week. I'll start in my home state of New Jersey, where Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey (777 Harrah's Boulevard, 609-441-5165) has several eateries that accommodate gluten-free diets: Reflections Café, Waterfront Buffet, Polistina's Italian Ristorante and The Steakhouse. Polistina's serves gluten-free pasta upon advance notice, so request it when making a reservation.

In Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Chuckles Pizza & Pasta Restaurant (160 Lawrenceville-Pennington Road, 609-895-6660) recently added pizza, pasta and desserts to its menu. The pasta includes ravioli, gnocchi and stuffed shells served with gluten-free bread, with brownies and carrot cake for dessert. The owner told me that he uses dedicated pans and slicers for the pizza and separate pots and utensils to prepare the pasta.

In Wilmington, Delaware, Fresh Thymes Cafe (1836 North Lovering, 302-656-2026) offers gluten-free bread at breakfast and lunch.

Last but not least are some new spots in Pennsylvania. Melodia Grill in Souderton (664 East Broad Street, 215-721-4000) is a contemporary Asian-influenced BYOB. The other restaurants, all in Philadelphia, participated in the recent Appetite for Awareness event: Agiato, a soon-to-be-opening Italian located in Manayunk (4359 Main Street); City Tavern, a colonial-style American (138 South 2nd Street, 215-413-1443) and Beneluxx Tasting Room, a Continental restaurant with Belgian influences (33 South 3rd Street, 267-318-7269), both in Old City; El Camino Real, a barbeque and Tex-Mex joint in Northern Liberties neighborhood (1040 North 2nd Street, 215-925-1110); Chifa, a Jose Garces-helmed Latin-Asian fusion in Washington Square West (707 Chestnut Street, 215-925-5555), fish, the sister of Mike Stollenwerk's Little Fish located near Graduate Hospital (1708 Lombard Street, 215-545-9600); Sauté, a New American BYOB in Queen Village (775 South Front Street, 215-271-9300); and Time, a self-described "restaurant, whiskey bar & tap room, and Bohemian absinthe lounge" in Midtown Village (1315 Sansom Street, 215-985-4800).

The just-opened Bella Sera Cafe in Philadelphia’s Fishtown section (2146 East Susquehanna Road, 267-939-5178) sells gluten-free cheesecake among its other menu items. Thanks to Grub Street Philadelphia for the tip.

Bella’s in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania (by appointment only, 484-467-1538) specializes in baking "celebration" cakes for weddings, birthdays and the like. Owner Lauren Cortesi's walnut dacquoise with milk chocolate buttercream and flourless chocolate cake are naturally gluten free, and she also offers vegan chocolate, vanilla and carrot cakes and cupcakes with gluten-free ingredients. Although Lauren does bake desserts that are not gluten-free in the same kitchen, she uses separate utensils and equipment for her gluten-free varieties.

On the other side of the Delaware River, Diane’s La Patisserie in West Berlin, New Jersey (405 Bloomfield Drive, 609-560-4111) also bakes gluten-free special occasion cakes. While the bakery uses the same equipment for gluten-free and wheat products, owner Diane Nussbaum tells me that she cleans everything before preparing the gluten-free cakes and takes care to prevent cross-contamination.

I've also added several area gluten-free friendly caterers in the Delaware Valley to what was previously the listing for Bakeries and Markets.

Joe Palumbo's Mirabella Cafe in Cherry Hill, New Jersey is sponsoring another cooking class with Chef Tammy Hughel. The gluten-free three-course tasting menu will be available at the class, to be held on Tuesday, November 12. The class starts at 6 p.m. and costs $40. Reservations are suggested.

With Fall in full swing, Moondance Heavenly Desserts has released its seasonal pumpkin cheesecake, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, in both 6-inch and mini versions. All of the cheesecakes and brownies made by Moondance, which I wrote about in May, are gluten free. They can be found locally at Whole Foods.

Pei Wei's sister restaurant P.F. Chang's China Bistro is offering 20 percent off to members of its Warrior Card loyalty program on Saturday, October 31, whether dining in or taking out. Just show your card at time of purchase.

GoPicnic has its gluten-free SafariMunch on sale at its online store through Sunday, November 1 for $2.99 each. The ready-to-eat meal comes with tortilla chips and salsa, sunflower seed crunch, strawberry applesauce, snack mix and snickerdoodle cookies. Use code GLUTENFREE at checkout to get 20 percent off your order.

Triumph Dining is offering free standard shipping through November 11 on the newly revised third edition of its Essential Gluten-Free Grocery Guide ($19.95), the fourth edition of its Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide ($23.95) and its Gluten-Free Dining Cards ($18.95), which come in 10 languages for use in many ethnic restaurants. We've used the dining cards successfully for many years in American, Japanese, Thai and Chinese eateries. Just visit Triumph Dining's website, add your items to the shopping cart, enter coupon code NEWS389 in the shopping cart area and click the "Apply" button. All of the items come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Finally this week, I wanted to share the link to a post from Lisa at Gluten Free Foodies, who is a Phillies fan living in the state of Washington. Celebrating the Phillies' World Series appearance, she wrote this week that she convinced the owner of her local pizza shop to create a gluten-free Philly Cheese Steak pizza. From the picture she posted on her blog, the pizza looks like a winner!

Have a great weekend!

Go Without Gluten

UPDATE (9/21/09): GoPicnic is offering 20% off orders at its online store through October 31 with the use of a promotional code. Just type KIWI in the coupon code box at checkout. Thanks to reader Dina for the info.
______________

Among the foods my older son tried for the first time at Camp Celiac in August was a ready-to-eat boxed meal from GoPicnic. GoPicnic's founders developed the concept of the shelf-stable "picnic" meal in 2004 for a major U.S. airline. Recognizing the benefits such shelf-stable meal programs could bring to others, the company's founders expanded on the original concept, creating meals for different types of diets, including those who eat gluten free. GoPicnic works directly with manufacturers to develop single-serving sizes of interesting products.

The company makes three kid-friendly MightyMunch gluten-free meals: ExploreMunch, SafariMunch and SportsMunch. ExploreMunch includes an Old Wisconsin turkey stick, a Copper Cowbell white cheddar cheese slice, Calbee baked Snapea crisps, Mrs. May's sunflower seed crunch, Sweet Perry Orchards natural strawberry apple sauce and Surf Sweets all-natural gummy bears. SafariMunch contains Salba Smart organic tortilla chips, Ortega mild salsa, Sheffa zesty snack mix, Mrs. May's sunflower seed crunch, Sweet Perry Orchards natural strawberry applesauce, and Enjoy Life snickerdoodle cookies. The SportsMunch variety includes Bridgford turkey pepperoni slices, Sensible Portions cheddar multigrain crisps, Mrs. May's pumpkin seed crunch, Sweet Perry Orchards natural cinnamon applesauce, and Enjoy Life chocolate chip cookies.

Three other varieties are geared toward adults. The GoTrek box includes Jack Link's beef steak nuggets, a Copper Cowbell Swiss cheese slice, Sheffa zesty snack mix, Mariani cranberries and pineapple blend and Swiss Delicato milk chocolate. The AnywhereBreak meal includes Jack Link's beef steak nuggets, Corazonas Squeeze of Lime tortilla chips, Ortega mild salsa, a Copper Cowbell white cheddar cheese slice, Mrs. May's cashew crunch, Mariani dried cranberries and Swiss Delicato dark chocolate. ZestyBreak contains includes Bridgford turkey pepperoni slices, Copper Cowbell Asiago cheese spread, Mary's Gone Crackers whole-grain crackers, Sheffa zesty snack mix, Mariani Ultimate apricots, Lärabar Apple Pie fruit and nut bar and Swiss Delicato dark chocolate.

I recently ordered direct from the company two MightyMunch Gluten-Free Samplers, which contain each of the three different Munch varieties. The meals have come in handy for lunches at my son's school and for a quick bite before late-afternoon Little League baseball games. He doesn't like every item in each box, but there's enough other food in there that sates his appetite.

GoPicnic donates 5% of all sales of gluten-free meals (which range from $4.99 to $6.99 each) to the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research. New customers can sign up for the company's newsletter to get a 10%-off coupon code for use on their first order. Shipping is free for orders over $99. Several varieties of GoPicnic's gluten-free meals are also available for online ordering at Costco.
