Katie Chalmers’ new children's book, Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease, grew out of personal experience: she was diagnosed with the disease in 2007 and, after having her children tested, discovered that her daughter Morgan has it too.
Katie's book, which is neatly illustrated with drawings atop colorful photographs, relates a conversation between a mother and her young daughter who learns that she has celiac disease. In the exchange, the little girl understands that while her diet will be changing, her youthful enthusiasm will not be diminished. The book is available locally at Wegmans for a discounted price of $11.16 and is being carried in the Nature’s Marketplace area of the stores. For more information about the book and to view sample pages, visit Katie's website (the book can be purchased there as well); you can also "like" her on Facebook and follow her on Twitter.

My son recently found out that he has Celiac Disease and so we have just begun this journey of switching to a GF Lifestyle of eating. But I think that the best product he has found so far would have to be Udi's GF Sandwich Bread. He LOVES bread, so this has helped him alot. Thanks! Lori at icalledonjesus@aol.com
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as if Udi's is the winner to a lot of Gluten Free eaters this year. It is so wonderful to pull the bread from the freezer and have a sandwich that does not taste "sandy". We also love the new pretzels from Snyders. Betty Crocker has done a good job as well. The vanilla cake mix and brownie mix are very well like in our home as well.
ReplyDeletegkok02@hotmail.com
Another great review, Michael! It's fun to see all our different write-ups on Katie's book. :-) Happy to be participating in this event with Katie, you, and all the others!

ReplyDeleteMy favorit gluten-free item must be gluten-free frozen waffles... I used them constantly to make breadcrumbs as well as the obvious (breakfast for my son) and for sweet dessert-like sandwiches. I have even used them to make croutons. They are so versitale!

Our best find was Udi's bread while my son was in Colorado on a school trip, and then after having it shipped monthly to PA for 6 months, we were overjoyed when it became available lovally at Wegmans!
ReplyDeleteYogurt covered Glutino pretzels. A true indulgence.
ReplyDeletedangrdafne @ gmail.com
The very best new product I have found this year is Tanya's gluten free soft pretzels and banana cake! Tried it at the Appetite for Awareness in Philly and searched until I found a health food store in West Chester with it. Currently working with a local Delaware Health Food Store to try and carry the products.
ReplyDeleteMy 4 year old daughter and I, loved discovering the Udi's bread and pizza crust this year! We were also very excited to start using the Bisquick mix- it makes great pizza crust! Lastly, so happy to find Kinnikinnick hamburger and hotdog buns....so many discoveries!!

I think the best thing I finally tried this year was Udi's bread. I *love* that I can let it thaw, and eat the bread as is. No need to toast. I don't have to worry about it going bad on the counter top over the course of a single week. Fabulous!

garbanzo bean flour!!!! and also light tapioca loaf by ener-g
ReplyDeletedosa.dara at gmail . com
Our familily's favorite gf item these days is definitely garbanzo bean flour. Exchange it for regular flour 1:1 and it makes the most delicious chocolate chip cookies! The non gf members of the family agree with me!
ReplyDeleteI would say Udi's pizza crust is the best find this year. Love udis!
ReplyDeleteBy far - the best find of the year for our gf family is Udi's bread. However, I would like to kiss the ceo of Snyder's for the pretzel sticks -- they're the only commercially prepared snack food our 4 year old who is gf/lf/sf/ff can have!!!
ReplyDeleteriehmanmurphy(at)gmail(dot)com
My daughter is 17 and recently diagnosed with being allergic to wheat. I have always been a cook. This drastic change has affected us all, but I am learning more and more every day. School lunches seem to be the hardest. Snacks are so spendy in the stores and I sometimes get in the rut of hummus and veggies for her. It would be so nice to be able to try some of these snacks for her. She always feels left out that she doesn't get to eat what everyone else at school eats. The grocery item I discovered in 2010 was Quinoa pasta. I get the macaroni shaped ones and make a killer mac and cheese that even fools the non gluten-intollerant folks. The recipe is on my blog http://whatsfordinner-momwhatsfordinner.blogspot.com/

Udi's gluten free bagels!
ReplyDeleteWe have been GF for just a year now so we're really still discovering so many things. I think the best thing for us has been Udi's bread & bagels. My 1st grader can now bring sandwiches to school again. But I also love quinoa pasta and just picked up the GF Bisquick today! Thank you for the wonderful giveaway!
ReplyDeleteNicole27202 -at- frontier -dot- com
After a year of being diagnosed with celiac, my wife's only choice for bread/rolls is Schar Ciabatta Rolls, the best we have found so far.
ReplyDeleteI was so excited when Betty Crocker came out with some GF things--yummy cake mix, also Bisquick GF pancake baking mix--makes great apple crisp.
ReplyDeleteOur best Gluten Free discovery has been Kinnikinnick
ReplyDeleteeverything . . . we love their white sandwich bread, their pancake mix is the best we've had and their all purpose flour has been the best substitute for all our recipes . . . you'd never know they were gluten free! We love you Kinnikinnick!
I love Bob's Red Mill GF All Purpose Baking Flour
ReplyDeleteAll the Red Mill products, bought online or in a grocery store, have helped me to bake excellent breads, and make scones, cookies, cakes, coffee cakes.
Susan from Germantown
I'm trying to cook for a sick friend with gluten intolerance. She has discovered Udi bread and has two slices left. Looks like a road trip is my near future. Nothing much available locally.
ReplyDeleteWe've tried a lot of things. But I think the one that we like the most is the Udi's bagels. Hands down, that's the first thing we'll reach for when we're looking for bread. I can't get more than that in this town from that company. And though I can probably get it online, I am definitely planning a trip to Denver soon. Just because I can.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your giveaway. Sounds like fun.
metal.walflower@gmail.com
Wow, that's a tough one. Probably a three way tie between Udi's bread, Schar cookies and Against The Grain pizzas.
ReplyDeletekaliprana at gmail.com
Mi-Del ginger snaps! I substituted them in a pumpkin cheesecake recipe! GREAT flavor and wonderful on their own, too!
ReplyDeletebooka62@aol.com
Udi's bread is pretty good...but it's just too $$$.
ReplyDeleteangelikness@yahoo.com
Udi's bread is the only specialty item we have tried yet as my daughter is newly diagnosed. It's pretty good but the price tag...not so much! It would be such a blessing to have this giveaway for my 10 year old girl. They would make AWESOME snacks for her club meetings when everyone else is snacking on gluten. Living with gluten issues is hard, but I think it is especially hard for kids.
