News & Notes: August 22, 2014

There are more gluten-free options in Mercer County, New Jersey this week. Princeton Pi (86 Nassau St., 609-924-5515) offers a 12" pizza, as does the Massimo's mini chain down the block in Princeton (110 Nassau St., 609-924-0777) and in Robbinsville (1035 Washington Blvd., 609-448-2288). Massimo's Hamilton location (1633 Hamilton Ave., 609-586-3777) is currently closed for repairs. Separate bakeware and cutters are used; request that sauce and toppings be taken from the back-up supply.

Princeton mainstay Alchemist & Barrister (28 Witherspoon St., 609-924-5555) lists gluten-free options on its menus and can modify other items.

In Wilmington, River Rock Kitchen (818 Shipyard Dr., 302-654-2900) serves gluten-free French toast for breakfast. Guests should request that their orders be prepared in a separate pan.

Campo's Deli in Old City Philadelphia (214 Market St., 215-923-1000) can prepare cheesesteaks on gluten-free rolls.

Reader Sam L. let me know that Cool Scoops in North Wildwood (1111 New Jersey Ave., 609-729-2665) has gluten-free ice cream cones. In Wildwood proper, Moira M. recently had great gluten-free meals at Jersey Girl (3601 Atlantic Ave., 609-523-1800) and Neil's Steak and Seafood House (222 E. Schellenger Ave., 609-522-5226).

Dock Mike's Pancake House in Sea Isle City (4615 Landis Ave., 609-263-3625) serves gluten-free pancakes. (Thanks to Pat E. for the tip.)

Tuesday's blog post featured the gluten-free options at the area's famous Wawa convenience-store chain.

Some closings to report: Houlihan's in Plymouth Meeting has shut its doors and the restaurants at the Revel will close as of the casino-hotel's shutdown on September 1.

In product news, Aldi markets are stocking house-brand gluten-free marshmallow rice crispy treats. An eight-count box of snack size bars sells for $1.79. (Hat tip to reader Melissa D. for the find.)

A New York company, GeeFree, has a couple of novel items that are making their way to market. Franks in a blanket and Greek specialty spanakopita are both made with gluten-free puff pastry dough. Pat E. mentioned on the Gluten Free Philly Facebook page that Nature's Harvest in Willow Grove (101 E. Moreland Rd., 215-659-7705) carries the latter.

Have a great weekend!
