News & Notes: May 26, 2017

This week's Sweets & Snacks Expo in Chicago brought word of some novel twists on traditional gluten-free favorites. This December, Skittles and Starburst are spicing things up with Sweet Heat versions of their classic candies.

Just Born's Peeps brand is set to expand with more premium Peeps Delights. Look for maple brown sugar marshmallow with white fudge, sugar cookie marshmallow with white fudge, and peppermint bark marshmallow with dark chocolate later this year.

Locally, Station Taproom in Downington (207 W. Lancaster Ave., 484-593-0560) has gluten-free burger buns and can recommend other items on its rotating menu that are gluten free. (Thanks Kaitlyn M.)

In Chester County, Hood's BBQ in Unionville (1664 W. Doe Run Rd., 610-347-1670) lists gluten-free items on its lunch/dinner menu, including wings and fries prepared in a dedicated fryer. Gluten-free kaiser rolls are available for sandwiches.

Greenplate in Cinnaminson (202 Rt. 130 N., 856-735-5468) offers gluten-free rice noodles as a stir-fry base and all salad dressings are gluten free. Request stir-frys to be prepared in a clean wok.

Iron Hill Brewery announced this week plans to open another Delaware location, this one in Rehoboth Beach (19791 Coastal Hwy.). The estimate opening date is in Summer 2018. A second location in Philadelphia, this one in the renovated Market East area (1150 Market St.), is slated to debut in Spring 2018. All of the mini-chain's restaurants have gluten-free menus.

Mom's Organic Market is set to open its long-planned Philadelphia location along Market East (34 S. 11th St.) on June 23.

If you attended last Saturday's Greater Philly Gluten-Free Expo, then you may have sampled pizza crusts from Rose's Gluten Free Bakery. Rose's baked goods are produced at the Artisan Exchange in West Chester (208 Carter Dr., 610-308-6186), where customers can pick up online orders. Products are also sold at farmer's markets in Exton, Phoenixville and Downington and other area stores.

Carmel Kitchen in Warrington recently closed. The Florida-based chain's location in Allentown (3750 Hamilton Blvd., 484-350-3147) remains open. (Thanks Brian K.)
