The historic Smithville Inn in Galloway (1 N. New York Rd., 609-652-7777) notes gluten-free and gluten-free-adaptable options on its dinner menu.
In nearby Egg Harbor Township, A Touch of Italy (6629 Black Horse Pike, 609-646-1855) also marks gluten-free choices on the dinner menu.
Reader Elizabeth R. emailed me about Elcy's Cafe at the Glenside SEPTA Station (1 W. Glenside Ave., 215-884-5600) which offers gluten-free bread for sandwiches and soups.

An Amber Designation means that a restaurant has verified ingredients and undertaken basic server training, but kitchen practices may vary widely.

Hello, Grilladelphia! Items from the gluten-free menu, which include fish and chips, beer-battered onion rings and pizza, will be served starting at 3 p.m. Bards beer and Magners cider will be the featured drinks, and there will even be dessert thanks to Main Line Bakery.

News & Notes: October 15, 2010
I was happy to publish a guest restaurant review for this week's feature, and the timing was fortuitous. Reader and Philadelphia Gluten-Free Supper Clubber Adriana Z. wrote about the group's recent meal at Adsum in a week in which the restaurant received lots of good press. Food critics at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia City Paper also found much to recommend.
In restaurant news this week, contemporary American Za Restaurant in Pennington (147 West Delaware Avenue, 609-737-4400) notes gluten-free items on its lunch and dinner menus.
Gluten-free pizza and pasta are available at Medford's Illiano Cucina Mediterranea (200 Tuckerton Road, 888-748-4765).
Reader Annsley K. let me know that the chef at Olive on Third, a newish Italian in Philadelphia's Society Hill section (516 South 3rd Street, 267-519-9498), is knowledgeable about celiac disease and can easily accommodate gluten-free dietary requests.
Currently served in bottles at Northern Liberties' Swift Half Pub (1001 North 2nd Street, 215-923-4600) are Redbridge, Original Sin Pear Cider and Magners Cider.
New to the list of gluten-free friendly caterers is Jack Kramer's Catering in Philadelphia (4217 Chestnut Street, 215-662-5300). Operations manager Brian Miller, who has a family member with celiac, told me that the caterer can prepare gluten-free foods for corporate and social events. The company will be participating in the Appetite for Awareness event on October 24.
Gluten-free breakfast choices have increased with the introduction of a couple new items. First, Glutino has debuted glazed original and chocolate donuts, six to a box. Look for them in the frozen food section of supermarkets and health food stores.
Smart Ones, made by Heinz, has added a Cheesy Scramble with Hashbrowns frozen dish. It's made with scrambled egg whites and Monterey Jack, cheddar and reduced-fat mozzarella cheeses with a side of potatoes.
October 24 stands to be a busy day in the local celiac community. In addition to Appetite for Awareness, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is hosting area benefit walks. One will be along the Camden waterfront, where "Team Celiac" will be participating. The three-mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Readers can register for the walk or make a donation. The other will be at Bucks County Community College in Newtown starting at 10 a.m. Advance registration is recommended.
A new book for children called “Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease?” is available exclusively at Wegmans through December 31, 2010. Katie Chalmers’ book grew out of personal experience: she learned in 2007 that she had the disease and, after having her children tested, learned that her daughter Morgan has it too. The book is available at Wegmans for $11.16 (a 20 percent discount of the list price) and will be carried in the Nature’s Marketplace area of the store, where gluten-free foods are sold. Chalmers will sign books at Saturday, October 30 at Wegmans in Mount Laurel from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday, October 31 at Wegmans in Malvern, also from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Enjoy the weekend and root on the Phillies!

News & Notes: July 9, 2010
Thanks to everyone who turned out at the Phillies game Wednesday to support Celiac Awareness Night. The gluten-free food stand offered Seasons Pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, Good Eatz sweets and more. With the large turnout and variety of food and beverages purchased, hopefully the stadium concessionaire will take notice and add to the current gluten-free options.
Earlier in the week, I wrote about my family's recent trip to Ocean City that included stops at two gluten-free-friendly eateries on the Boardwalk.
Terra, a New American in Philly's WashWest nabe (243 South Camac Street, 215-545-1102), can accommodate gluten-free diners. Thanks to Whitney and Kristin at the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness for the good word.
Doylestown's Baked on Main (22 South Main Street, 215-340-7629) has gluten-free dough available for its rustic flatbreads. I'm told that the prep area is cleaned for a gluten-free order and the flatbreads are baked in the oven on a pan.
Also in the 'burbs, Limoncello Ristorante in West Chester (9 North Walnut Street, 610-436-6230) offers gluten-free pasta.
While the flatbreads there aren't gluten-free, Earth Bread + Brewery in Mt. Airy (7136 Germantown Avenue, 215-242-6666) does have Glutenus Minimus on tap, brewed with rice, buckwheat and sorghum. Reader Chuck B., who e-mailed me about the beer and took the photo nearby, described it as "very light, smooth, refreshing and lemony."
I've posted the updated gluten-free menus from several Jose Garces concepts to the restaurant list: Amada and Chima recently refreshed their choices.
Reader Jayne O. let me know that Lucky Bones Backwater Grille in Cape May is working on a formal gluten-free menu, which should be available before the summer is out.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Roy's, the Hawaiian fusion restaurant in Center City, closed last weekend.
Now arriving on Track 1 is Main Line Baking Co., a new gluten-free bakery set to officially open on Monday at the Wynnewood Train Station (75 East Wynnewood Road, 215-292-4200). Samples and free Colombe coffee will be available today from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The baked goods - items like chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, lemon pound cake and vanilla cupcakes - will be available Monday through Friday. The sweets are baked in a dedicated gluten-free/dairy-free kitchen on the premises. A tip of the conductor's cap to Jessica at the Celiac Advocate blog, who learned about the bakery in her travels this week.
New in Haddonfield is Desserted Pastries (605 North Haddon Avenue, 856-275-7357). Owner Carrie Longacre tells me that she has gluten-free chocolate chip cookies available. She uses specially designated utensils, bowls and the like and sanitizes the kitchen's stainless steel table for that rendition. She can also make other gluten-free sweets with advance notice.
Virago Baking Company has reopened at its new home at 322 1/2 West Main Street in Lansdale.
With thanks to reader Mark M., the last day of retail sales at Mr. Ritts Gluten Free Bakery in Millville is July 31. The store is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the end of the month, but call to check on availability.
Plum Catering (215-880-3881) is a new gluten-free caterer that specializes in on-site parties and private chef services throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The company will be catering a celiac awareness picnic at Scranton's Nay Aug Park on Sunday, August 1 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is being hosted by Laure Stasik, owner of Alternative Eating in Scranton, with proceeds donated to the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research. Plum Catering will be serving up burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, turkey chili, veggie chili, fudge, peanut butter-chocolate poppers and more. There will be live music, kids' games and a Chinese auction. Ticket information is available from Alternative Eating at 570-344-6569.
Next time you're at Ikea in South Philadelphia or Conshohocken to pick up a Billy bookcase or Ekby shelf, don't forget to grab a gluten-free, straight-outta-Stockholm almond torte or raspberry cheesecake.
Have a great weekend!

News & Notes
There's been a lot of interest in the current Goodies Giveaway - a copy of Jacqueline Mallorca's Gluten-Free Italian cookbook, just published this month - but there's still time get in your entry. Just write a comment to the post on your favorite Italian food, along with a way for me to contact you if you're the winner, by Sunday, November 1.
On Wednesday, I wrote about Pei Wei Asian Diner's gluten-free menu and the cool option to place a take-out order online. Now all they need to do is offer a delivery option!
I added a slew of dining establishments to the blog's restaurant list this week. I'll start in my home state of New Jersey, where Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey (777 Harrah's Boulevard, 609-441-5165) has several eateries that accommodate gluten-free diets: Reflections Café, Waterfront Buffet, Polistina's Italian Ristorante and The Steakhouse. Polistina's serves gluten-free pasta upon advance notice, so request it when making a reservation.
In Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Chuckles Pizza & Pasta Restaurant (160 Lawrenceville-Pennington Road, 609-895-6660) recently added pizza, pasta and desserts to its menu. The pasta includes ravioli, gnocchi and stuffed shells served with gluten-free bread, with brownies and carrot cake for dessert. The owner told me that he uses dedicated pans and slicers for the pizza and separate pots and utensils to prepare the pasta.
In Wilmington, Delaware, Fresh Thymes Cafe (1836 North Lovering, 302-656-2026) offers gluten-free bread at breakfast and lunch.
Last but not least are some new spots in Pennsylvania. Melodia Grill in Souderton (664 East Broad Street, 215-721-4000) is a contemporary Asian-influenced BYOB. The other restaurants, all in Philadelphia, participated in the recent Appetite for Awareness event: Agiato, a soon-to-be-opening Italian located in Manayunk (4359 Main Street); City Tavern, a colonial-style American (138 South 2nd Street, 215-413-1443) and Beneluxx Tasting Room, a Continental restaurant with Belgian influences (33 South 3rd Street, 267-318-7269), both in Old City; El Camino Real, a barbeque and Tex-Mex joint in Northern Liberties neighborhood (1040 North 2nd Street, 215-925-1110); Chifa, a Jose Garces-helmed Latin-Asian fusion in Washington Square West (707 Chestnut Street, 215-925-5555), fish, the sister of Mike Stollenwerk's Little Fish located near Graduate Hospital (1708 Lombard Street, 215-545-9600); Sauté, a New American BYOB in Queen Village (775 South Front Street, 215-271-9300); and Time, a self-described "restaurant, whiskey bar & tap room, and Bohemian absinthe lounge" in Midtown Village (1315 Sansom Street, 215-985-4800).
The just-opened Bella Sera Cafe in Philadelphia’s Fishtown section (2146 East Susquehanna Road, 267-939-5178) sells gluten-free cheesecake among its other menu items. Thanks to Grub Street Philadelphia for the tip.
Bella’s in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania (by appointment only, 484-467-1538) specializes in baking "celebration" cakes for weddings, birthdays and the like. Owner Lauren Cortesi's walnut dacquoise with milk chocolate buttercream and flourless chocolate cake are naturally gluten free, and she also offers vegan chocolate, vanilla and carrot cakes and cupcakes with gluten-free ingredients. Although Lauren does bake desserts that are not gluten-free in the same kitchen, she uses separate utensils and equipment for her gluten-free varieties.
On the other side of the Delaware River, Diane’s La Patisserie in West Berlin, New Jersey (405 Bloomfield Drive, 609-560-4111) also bakes gluten-free special occasion cakes. While the bakery uses the same equipment for gluten-free and wheat products, owner Diane Nussbaum tells me that she cleans everything before preparing the gluten-free cakes and takes care to prevent cross-contamination.
I've also added several area gluten-free friendly caterers in the Delaware Valley to what was previously the listing for Bakeries and Markets.
Joe Palumbo's Mirabella Cafe in Cherry Hill, New Jersey is sponsoring another cooking class with Chef Tammy Hughel. The gluten-free three-course tasting menu will be available at the class, to be held on Tuesday, November 12. The class starts at 6 p.m. and costs $40. Reservations are suggested.
Triumph Dining is offering free standard shipping through November 11 on the newly revised third edition of its Essential Gluten-Free Grocery Guide ($19.95), the fourth edition of its Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide ($23.95) and its Gluten-Free Dining Cards ($18.95), which come in 10 languages for use in many ethnic restaurants. We've used the dining cards successfully for many years in American, Japanese, Thai and Chinese eateries. Just visit Triumph Dining's website, add your items to the shopping cart, enter coupon code NEWS389 in the shopping cart area and click the "Apply" button. All of the items come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Finally this week, I wanted to share the link to a post from Lisa at Gluten Free Foodies, who is a Phillies fan living in the state of Washington. Celebrating the Phillies' World Series appearance, she wrote this week that she convinced the owner of her local pizza shop to create a gluten-free Philly Cheese Steak pizza. From the picture she posted on her blog, the pizza looks like a winner!

With Fall in full swing, Moondance Heavenly Desserts has released its seasonal pumpkin cheesecake, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, in both 6-inch and mini versions. All of the cheesecakes and brownies made by Moondance, which I wrote about in May, are gluten free. They can be found locally at Whole Foods.
