News & Notes: July 19, 2013

With all of the pizza and pasta mentions in this post, I'm renaming this Friday roundup compendio di venerdi.

Opening Monday in South Philadelphia is Kermit's Bake Shoppe (2204 Washington Ave., 267-639-4267), a take-out/delivery-only pizza shop and bakery. Taffets gluten-free baguettes will be sold there, as well as pizzas made separately with Taffets 12" shells.

Also in Philly, South Street's Bianca Pizza and Trattoria (514 South St., 215-629-9232) has gluten-free pizza prepped with dedicated ingredients and utensils. (Thanks Gabriella I.)

The last of the original Mom's Bake at Home Pizza shops has closed in Medford, but you can still get take-and-bake gluten-free pies at Mom Mom's Gourmet Take N' Bake in Newtown (156 N. State St., 215-968-5054) - ask for separate sauce and cheese - and at Original Bake at Home in Devon (896 Lancaster Ave., 610-254-0580), which also carries gluten-free ravioli and stuffed shells to go.

Although Mom's isn't in Medford any more, Riviera Pizza (6 Stokes Rd., 609-654-4300) in nearby Medford Lakes serves gluten-free pizza already topped with sauce and cheese. (Thanks Karen P.)

Gluten-free pizza can also be had at Downingtown's Caln Pizza & Pasta (3919 W. Lincoln Hwy., 610-269-7960) and at Vince's Pizza in Yardley (25 S. Main St., 215-493-1985). Vince's also has gluten-free penne pasta.

Three more Mercer County Italian restaurants are serving gluten-free pasta: Villa Rosa Ristorante in Ewing (41 Scotch Rd., 609-882-6841), Padrino's Bistro in Hamilton (2452 Kuser Rd., 609-587-7575), and Villa Romanza in Hamilton (429 Rt. 156, 609-585-1717), which also has a gluten free menu.

Bellini Grill on Rittenhouse Square in Center City (220 S. 16th St., 215-545-1191) has gluten-free pasta, as does La Campagnola in Shamong (439 Oakshade Rd., 609-268-0600).

European food company Sam Mills has made gluten-free pasta for the U.S. market for a while now, but is expanding into other product lines. Hitting markets are granola bars (trail mix, fruit mix, blueberrychocolate chipdark chocolate and peanut butter), several varieties of buckwheat and millet granola (nutshoney & nutsflaxseed and strawberry & almonds), Alfredo and Butter & Herb "Pasta Sides," and vanilla and chocolate sandwich creme cookies. All are GMO free.

The South Beach Diet line of foods has three GFCO-certified gluten-free bars. The dark chocolate (and chocolate coated) Good to Go cereal bar pack 9 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein, while the Chewy Nut Bars, which come in chocolate chunk and nut crunch versions and are made with non-GMO ingredients, have 6 grams of fiber and between 6 and 7 grams of protein.

Van's newest addition to its gluten-free line is called The Perfect 10, a crispy six whole grain and four seed baked cracker.

Fans of Hodgson Mill will be happy to know that a chocolate chip cookie mix has joined the company's other gluten-free baking products.

Also new is all-natural elbow macaroni and cheese from Hain Celestial's Gluten Free Cafe line. You can get a dollar-off coupon for any GFC product through the company's website.

The new Minute Multi-Grain Medley is the first extension to the brand's instant rice flagship line.  A blend of four gluten-free foods, Minute Multi-Grain Medley is made with 100 percent whole grains including brown rice, Thai red rice, wild rice and quinoa. The quick-cooking medley has a slightly chewy, nutty flavor and is pre-portioned in four separate bags for ease of preparation.

Tickets are now on sale for Philly's first hard cider festival, with more than 30 gluten-free ciders available for sampling. The event will be held on Sat., September 28 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

Have a great weekend!
