News & Notes: March 28, 2014

The popular 4C brand of bread crumbs now comes in a gluten-free version - two actually. Certified by the Gluten Free Certifying Organization, 4C Gluten Free Crumbs are made with rice flour. The seasoned variety (plain is the other) is blended with herbs, spices and 100% imported Pecorino Romano cheese.

All-gluten-free Steadfast Beer has grown the distribution footprint of its Sorghum Pale Ale (which you can read about in this 2012 post), Golden Blonde Ale and seasonal Pumpkin Spice Ale beyond its home base of Albany, New York to encompass all of New Jersey. In addition to their current lineup of gluten-free ales, Steadfast plans to release a new beer, Steadfast Oatmeal Cream Stout, in year-round 4-packs as well as quarterly 22 oz. “Special Editions” of the same beer this year. April 2014 marks their second anniversary of conducting business and will be commemorated with the release of a Belgian-inspired Biere de Garde in 22 oz. bottles. Steadfast will be participating at the Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival next weekend.

Fellow gluten-free brewer New Planet Beer was the subject of Tuesday's beer review column, covering all six varieties of the Colorado company's ales.

Gluten-free bakery and juice bar Pure Sweets has released a video trailer to mark its impending grand opening at 1706 Locust St. in Center City Philadelphia. The opening is now slated for next month.

Nearby, Philly.com reports that the Elephant & Castle at 18th & Market in Center City closed last week. The British-style pub served gluten-free burger buns.

Last week was also last call for *ndulge, a bakery in Manayunk and Bryn Mawr that offered gluten-free cupcakes. Thanks to reader Robin F. for the tip.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I look forward to trying out these bread crumbs. its become a life passion of mine. hah
The true test for me is chicken parm. The crumbs need to get crispy and stay crispy. Even if we wait to add the sauce to the last minute, the crumb coating soaks everything up, turns into a gooey mess, and falls off.
Pasta Pomodoro in Voorhees has the absolute best GF Chick Parm. The crust stays crispy the entire time. I know part of his secret... will have to try it on my own one time. :-)

  4. Smith & Forge - it seems absurd that any cider, any drink anywhere should be geared towards a specific gender. People should like what they like. Sweet drinks shouldn't be for 'women' and vice versa.
